Amid reported interest from Manchester United, Mesut Ozil opted to make the switch to North London instead.
According to claims made by Real Madrid gaffer, Carlo Ancelotti, the German playmaker insisted on completing his deadline-day £42.5M switch to Arsenal, because he wasn't prepared to face the stiff competition for places at the Spanish capital.
As per the Daily Star Ancelotti said “I've heard a lot of people talk about the departure of Ozil and now its my turn to talk.
“Nobody leaves Madrid if they don't want to.
“Ozil thought he had a lot of competition for places and asked to leave. It doesn't happen to everyone.
“The coaching staff's decision was to let Ozil leave.
“ We received a good bid and everyone was satisfied”
With the summer acquisitions of Gareth Bale and Isco, Ozil would be forgiven for having genuine concerns about the amount of game-time he would receive at Real, in a season culminating in a world cup in Brazil.
