Following the impressive deadline day capture of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid, Arsenal are arguably just three players away from being considered as legitimate challengers for Europe's top prize .
Below are three players the gunners must target in the winter transfer window to ensure they don't end up with only their customary certificate of participation come the end of the season.
Micah Richards
With captain Vermaelen currently injured and out of favor, Arsenal looks light at the back. Micah Richards has been linked with the gunners for quite some time now and the north Londoners could do worse than secure his signature in the winter window.
It's the Englishman's versatility that could prove the greatest asset; he is comfortable at either rightback or centerback, and would provide some serious competition and cover to the Arsenal back-line. What's more, with Zabaleta and co still as reliable as ever for City, Richards could be available in January.
Christian Benteke
It's no secret that Arsenal are on the lookout for a top marksman, as revealed by their very public pursuits of Rooney, Suarez and Higuain. Due to different circumstances, however, the aforementioned three proved beyond reach.
Having picked up from where he left off last season in the EPL with Aston Villa, the big Belgian guarantees one thing- goals. Strong in the air and good with both feet, Benteke is the perfect striker to provide competition for or complement Giroud.
Angel di Maria
The Argentine winger will in all probability be a benchwarmer at Madrid come January, thanks in no small part to the arrival of a certain Welshman.
Just like Mesut Ozil, the signing of the former Benfica man would be a real statement of intent from the gunners.
With Walcott and Di Maria patrolling opposite flanks at the Emirates, Arsene Wenger’s men would be a match for any team in Europe.
